Kids & Parents Learn to Code- Awesome Shield Workshop

When you have kids, you have the chance to rediscover the world and learn new things every day with them. Now, it’s time to understand how you can tell computers what to do!

This workshop is for absolute beginners: we’ll introduce you to Awesome Shield, a custom hardware with simplified code, and more than 100 online video tutorials that make coding fun and easy.

Awesome Shield is ready to go, right out of the box — simply connect the Awesome Shield hardware with Arduino and plug them into your computer.

Before the end of the event, you’ll be coding your very own project. For example, you’ll write a code that turns on an LED, and controls a simple speaker. By combining these new skills, you’ll create a police siren that’s controlled entirely by the code you’ve written.

Wait, what is Arduino?
Arduino is a small powerful computer that is used to build everything from hobby projects, to robotic art installations and satellites (there’s an actual Arduino satellite on space!). Awesome Shield teaches you how to code with Arduino and hardware.

Important information:
– This workshop is for kids (ages 11-14) and their parents.
– You will need to bring a laptop computer and headphones.
– Awesome Shields Kits are for free to use at the event 🙂 (We just need a picture in exchange).

We have limited capacity for the event. You need to RSPV on Eventbrite and we’ll ask you to confirm your attendance a couple of days before the event.

MONTAG Issue 2 Launch Party x Startup Guide Store

MONTAG, the magazine of weird futurist stories about tomorrow’s tech, was launched by Berlin startup Grover earlier this year, and is launching its second print edition at Startup Suide Store with an appropriately out-there party! Issue 2 is called “Better Bodies”, and discusses how, soon, we’ll be using technology to augment, improve and change our bodies: including implanting extra sensory devices, transfusing youthful blood, and how Blade Runner’s futuristic body issues are very relevant today.

It’ll be a party that reflects MONTAG’s ethos, in Startup Guide’s awesome space in Kreuzberg: join us for drinks to accompany half-human, half-machine artistic projections, interactive atmospheric visuals, cutting edge VR/AR art experiments to try, as well as some short talks about why Startup Guide and Grover are printing things in 2017. Plus, you’ll be the first people to get your hands on a free copy of MONTAG Issue 2! And yes, it’s on a Montag, so prepare to continue your weekend celebrations…

Grover

Grover is a fresh alternative to owning things – making technology accessible to everyone, by enabling people to subscribe to tech products monthly instead of buying them.

We are building a community of experience seekers who want to try new things, explore new worlds, upgrade their lives, go lighter, be kinder on the world. Technology is their friend, helping them to be better, faster, smarter. Turning tech products into a subscription service stretches the life cycle of products while empowers people to get more out of life by having access to many experiences and not that only one they can afford.

Startup Guide Store – Grand Opening Lisbon

We don’t even need to write that much about Lisbon, all the world and the media are already doing this for us. We decided to open our second store here for these reasons: Lisbon is home to many startups and also where we found the best place to be – the LXFactory.

The Startup Guide Store was created with the mission to promote people and businesses that are starting up and making their contributions to the world. Just like we continue to print our Startup Guides in the classic and timeless paper book format, we’re now bringing a space that will showcase entrepreneurship and creativity in person.

Don’t expect this to be a classic product store, but a place for experimentation, discovery, and sharing ‘wows’ and ‘hows’.

The Startup Guide Store is located in the Building G, Nº6. See you there!

Flash Sessions w/ With Company + Drinks

Juliana Proserpio – Designing desirable futures
Our humanity is very much connected to our ability to design and to redesign our own creations.
As designers, we’re constantly redesigning our relationship with our surroundings and also with our reality. It has the power to intentionally and deliberatively choose whether we want or not to interfere in our own ecosystem.
Design is as an action emerging from deep thinking, and logic for creating preferred futures, solutions and new business. Designing desirable futures means creating an intended outcome.
In this talk Juliana will describe how to build desirable futures, it’s processing and how to deploy the intention.

Rui Quinta – Coherently inconsistent branding
Allowing ourselves to be different its whats makes us significantly different from each other.
Brands should be able to be the same.
By defining certain rules (or tools) we should be able to create new ground to let brand design be explorative and spontaneous. Not repetitive. A lot like us.
We are not metronomes. Brands to bots, if not able to dialogue with people, should at least try to generate randomized cycles of repetitiveness.

Speakers:
As a speaker, Juliana creates awareness around the subject of innovation and the design of a world where we want to live in. She has been invited to talk at several events such as the Global Innovation Summit in San Jose, California an at TEDxMaua in Sao Paulo. In 2015 Juliana became a judge at the first William Drenttel Award for Excellence in Design.

In the last 7 years, Rui Quinta has been consciously applying the Design Thinking mindset – a process learned at the HPI – to the most various Branding and Business projects. He co-founded a fresh fish shop (www.peixariaxcentenaria.pt), an experience design studio (www.toyno.com) and a strategic design consultancy, With Company(www.with-company.com). He has also worked as a design consultant for several companies, he is a member of the innovation international network WWHDO and corporate coach for the HPI School of Design Thinking. More than having ideas, he likes to find ways to get to them.

About WeWork and The Creator Awards:

The collaborative workspace company WeWork is on a mission to inspire innovation and support Germany’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. In line with this ethos, the company recently launched a new, year-long awards programme called The Creator Awards, which recognises and rewards talented individuals and organisations.

As part of the awards programme, the company has pledged to donate a total of $20 million to entrepreneurs, small businesses, growing companies, non-profits, artists, and more, in cities all around the world—$1.5 million of which will be given away in Germany at a major event on September 26th.

Creators wishing to enter the German awards are invited to apply via The Creator Awards website (https://creatorawards.wework.com), and are asked to upload a video introducing themselves and their business idea.

The video can be short, snappy and made in about two minutes on a smartphone – the application itself takes a total of 10 minutes. Applications are closing on September 12th, so apply now!

The awards are available to ‘creators’ in three different categories: ‘The Incubate Award’ for individuals with an idea that needs funding, ‘The Launch Award’ for newly launched businesses or non-profits in need of guidance, and ‘The Scale Award’ for successful businesses or non-profits who are ready for a new challenge.

Shortlisted entries will then be invited to attend the German regional final in Berlin on 26th September, where they will pitch their business to a panel of judges. RSVP now to attend – https://creatorawardsberlin.splashthat.com/?preview

Startup Guide Store – Grand Opening w/ Kickstarter

Berlin, one of the most important and unique startup capitals in Europe, is home to a big part of our team, and is the city where we started it all with the release of the first Startup Guide in August 2014. It is a natural choice to open the doors of our very first Startup Guide Store here.

We love the feel of a book, to open and smell the pages. While the internet and online shops have made it possible for businesses to have access to a broader market, we still believe experiences are enhanced when one can see and feel the exciting products found in the real world. We felt the need to bring back a physical, and a closer connection between who is innovating and the people who will benefit from that innovation.

The Startup Guide Store was created with the mission to promote people and businesses that are starting up and making their contributions to the world. Just like we continue to print our Startup Guides in the classic and timeless paper book format, we’re now bringing a space that will showcase entrepreneurship and creativity in person.

We’re very happy to welcome Kickstarter as an official partner of the Startup Guide Store. Kickstarter has been helping artists, filmmakers, designers, developers, and creators making their ideas a reality. To date, tens of thousands of creative projects — big and small — have come to life with the support of the Kickstarter community. We couldn’t have asked for a better partnership.

Don’t expect this to be a classic product store, but a place for experimentation, discovery, and sharing ‘wows’ and ‘hows’.

Sissel Hansen (Startup Guide)
Christoph Nagel (Kickstarter)
